Kenasia Guilford arrested, charged with abduction and theft in Toledo
Kenasia Guilford appeared in court Monday in Toledo following her arrest on multiple felony counts. The firefighter faces allegations of abduction and burglary involving a colleague from her department.
Guilford, 33, of Toledo, faces charges of abduction, theft, motor vehicle theft and burglary. Court records detail the allegations against her.
Police affidavits said she handcuffed a man to a staircase with his consent. She later refused to unlock the handcuffs. The incident happened at a home in the 3600 block of Garrison.
The alleged victim broke free while still handcuffed, police said. Police allege Guilford took the man’s phone, car keys and house keys.
She took his car and broke into his house, police said. Officers found Guilford hiding in an upstairs bedroom.
The alleged victim is a fellow firefighter and a captain within the department. A TFRD spokesperson confirmed his status and rank.
The incident happened on a Tuesday. Guilford was arrested on Friday. The two were in a relationship, according to Guilford’s attorney in court.
“This series of incidents stems from a paramour situation where some information was learned by the defendant that would make anyone have substantial concern and was traumatic,” her attorney told the judge. “That being said, it was – for all practical purposes, at least initially – a paramour consensual situation that got out of hand because of information that was learned.”
Her attorney argued Guilford was not a community threat. He noted she had no prior criminal record.
The judge cited concern for the alleged victim’s safety. He set bail at $10,000 with a no-contact order.
The judge ruled Guilford must wear a GPS ankle monitor. TFRD declined to comment on her employment status.
Guilford also works as a registered nurse at the Lucas County Jail. Officials placed her on administrative leave Friday.
Municipal courts hold preliminary hearings to determine if probable cause exists in felony cases. Defendants may post bond under specific conditions set by a judge.
A preliminary hearing in Toledo is scheduled for Oct. 14.
