Derek Merrin talks taxes and energy in Toledo congressional race

Derek Merrin outlined his economic and energy platform in Toledo on Wednesday during his congressional campaign. The challenger seeks to unseat an incumbent lawmaker who has held office for over four decades. Marcy Kaptur has represented the district for more than 40 years.

Merrin sat down for an interview with reporter Shaun Hegarty to discuss his campaign. He stated that his primary goal centers on lowering income taxes across the board.

“Lower taxes, cut regulation. My number open priority is lowering the cost of living. Keeping more money is people’s pocketbook,” said Merrin.

Merrin also shared his views on tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump in Toledo. He emphasized the direct financial impact on local residents.

“I want to reduce the cost of living. Many of the tariffs increase the cost of living. I’m not a fan of tariffs that are going to drive up the cost of living. What I am supportive of are fair trade deals in America,” said Merrin.

Energy remains another focus. Merrin discussed measures to lower regional gas prices and boost production.

“I’m pro energy. There’s three ways to generate more energy. You have to extract it, you’ve got to transfer it, then you have to refine it. Every step of the way Democrats want to make it harder and more difficult to produce more energy. I’m going to support policies that produce more energy and increase the supply,” said Merrin.

He addressed foreign conflicts. Merrin stated that the military conflict involving Iran must conclude soon for families across northwest Ohio.

“I believe it’s important that this military conflict is wrapped up. I think we need to put America first. We’re not the world’s policemen. We cannot afford to have Iran attain a nuclear weapon. I think we have for the most part taken care of and eliminated that risk. I think it’s time that we wrapped this up,” said Merrin, “I want the war concluded like a vast majority of people in northwest Ohio. I’m confident that hopefully we’re very close to doing that.”

He noted that voters carry heavy frustration toward federal leaders in Washington. Merrin added that he plans to solve problems for residents in Toledo.

Members of the House of Representatives represent local congressional districts in the federal legislature. Candidates participate in televised interviews to share policy platforms with voters before elections occur.

The race remains a closely contested contest for the regional seat.
