Ohio gas tax suspension brings mixed savings across Toledo and Fremont

Ohio suspended its 38.5-cent fuel tax for 90 days, bringing mixed savings to Toledo and Fremont drivers. Local pump prices continue to vary between service stations despite the statewide tax cut.

In Fremont, regular fuel ranged from about $3.79 to nearly $4 per gallon. Stations around Toledo charged closer to $3.60 or even less.

Ernest Green said fuel purchases remain necessary regardless of pump prices. He still has places to go. “Whether the prices are high or not, you still got to fill your car up,” Green said.

The relief began on Sunday. State officials temporarily lifted the 38.5-cent rate for 90 days. Other commercial factors still drive retail fuel costs at local pumps.

Petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan said station competition and operating expenses shape prices. “So there’s a lot of different things, competition, cost of business, proximity to refinery, that always lead to different prices,” De Haan said.

De Haan said drivers should weigh travel costs before chasing lower fuel prices. “At 30 cents a gallon, it may not make much sense for you, unless you’re saving more than 50 cents to drive a half hour out of your way,” De Haan said.

Maryland traveler Alex Zeller stopped in Fremont during a long trip. “If I would have known that there’s cheaper prices within probably a half-hour drive, I probably would have kept going,” Zeller said.

State fuel taxes fund public road maintenance and infrastructure repairs across Ohio. Temporary tax suspensions reduce the state portion of retail gasoline charges. Retail service stations determine final pricing using local wholesale distribution costs.

Toledo drivers continue to see distinct price differences at neighboring fuel pumps.
