Delijah Ploof charged with murder in fatal Toledo shooting

Delijah Ploof was charged with murder Tuesday following a fatal Toledo shooting. A judge set his bail at $2.1 million for the death of Jermaine Smith.

Police arrested Ploof on Monday. He faces charges of murder and felonious assault. The shooting happened Sunday around 10:30 p.m. near Boles Drive.

Officers found the 52-year-old Smith in the 800 block of Boles with at least one gunshot wound. Smith died at the hospital. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 14.

In July, 17-year-old Zayona Jackson was shot and killed at the Weiler Homes development. Her father, Greg Jackson, said Smith was his cousin.

“We are all hurting. The whole community is hurting,” Jackson said.

Save Our Community is an intervention program aimed at reducing gun violence in Toledo. Members are asking residents to speak up. Save Our Community Commissioner Raymond Campos said the group works to build neighborhood relationships.

“We have to build the rapport and show them we are there to support them and navigate any barriers that they may be facing within that community,” Campos said.

Preliminary hearings allow a judge to review whether sufficient evidence exists to advance violent felony charges. Housing authorities routinely hold public forums to address safety issues following fatal neighborhood crimes.

Lucas Metropolitan Housing will hold a community meeting in Toledo on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from noon to 3 p.m.
