Tony Coleman II sentenced to prison in Toledo car theft shooting

Tony Coleman II of Toledo has been sentenced to prison for shooting a person trying to steal his car. Judge Ken Walz ordered Coleman to serve 7 to 9 years in the Ohio Department of Corrections on Sept. 24.

Coleman, 29, pleaded guilty in August to felonious assault and a firearm specification, court records show. A dozen other charges, including attempted murder and a drive-by shooting specification, were dismissed at sentencing.

Detectives say Coleman saw his vehicle being stolen outside his home. He chased the driver in another car and fired a semiautomatic handgun 17 times, court records state.

Fourteen of those rounds struck Coleman’s own vehicle. Two rounds hit the driver, later identified as Jamar Turner, in the torso.

Turner was hospitalized for his injuries, according to court records. He was indicted March 3 on a grand theft of a motor vehicle charge.

The case moved through the Lucas County Common Pleas Court before Judge Walz. Coleman entered his plea deal and was convicted in August.

Sentencing closed the Lucas County case against Coleman on Sept. 24, the same day a dozen other counts were dropped.

The Toledo man is now serving his term with the Ohio Department of Corrections. Turner still faces the grand theft charge from his March 3 indictment.

A Lucas County Common Pleas Court case moves from arraignment to pretrial hearings, then to a plea or trial. A sentencing hearing follows a guilty plea or verdict, and the judge sets the prison term within Ohio’s sentencing guidelines.
