Derrick Jones sentenced to probation in Sylvania Township Chuck E. Cheese fight
Derrick Jones was sentenced to two years of probation in Sylvania Township on Sept. 24 for his role in a February Chuck E. Cheese fight that left a man in a medically induced coma. Judge Ken Walz handed down the sentence, according to court records. Jones had pleaded guilty to assault on July 30. A separate count of felonious assault against him was dropped at the Sept. 24 hearing.
The Sylvania Township Chuck E. Cheese sits on Monroe Street. Witnesses told police a fight between Jones and another man, Keshawn Fell, began in the bathroom. The fight then spilled into a play area packed with children at a 5-year-old’s birthday party in February.
A 22-year-old man suffered serious injuries, including a broken eye socket. He was placed in an induced medical coma. The victim’s sister told 13 Action News that her brother collapsed during the fight. Family members believe he was hit with a weapon. Authorities have not confirmed how the man was injured.
The victim’s aunt told the news outlet she scrambled to protect children during the violence. “Like you knew when you went in the bathroom to fight, you knew that this was a kid’s establishment. You knew that. You knew it,” a family member said.
A Lucas County grand jury indicted Jones on March 5 on charges of felonious assault and assault. He is the man who pleaded guilty to the lesser assault charge in July. If Jones violates his probation, he could serve 180 days in CCNO, according to court records.
Fell was also charged in connection to the case. He originally faced a disorderly conduct charge stemming from what unfolded at a hospital emergency room after the victim was transported. Police have not released details about what happened there.
On April 20, Fell was indicted on charges of felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and having weapons while under disability. He pleaded not guilty in court on April 22. Court records show his bond was set at $100,000 with no 10%. Fell’s trial is scheduled to begin on June 22.
Probation is a court-ordered period of supervision in the community that lets a convicted offender serve a sentence outside prison. It typically carries rules like check-ins, curfews and travel limits. A violation can send the offender back to court.
The Sylvania Township case now moves forward against Fell as Jones begins his supervised term. Court records in Lucas County continue to track both men’s cases.
