Toledo Fire & Rescue seeks applications for next firefighter class

The Toledo Fire & Rescue Division is accepting candidate submissions for its upcoming training group in Toledo. The recruitment window will remain open through Nov. 6. This recruitment cycle offers local residents an opportunity to join the municipal emergency response team.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old by the start of the fire academy. They must also be under 40 years old when the application window closes. Each candidate must hold a valid driver’s license and a high school diploma or GED.

The recruitment process requires several competitive stages. Applicants must complete a written test, a physical ability test, and a background investigation before selection.

Lt. James White said the department seeks people ready to solve problems and assist the public.

“It takes a special individual to do this job. We come together as a unit to serve the community.”

Private Jason Johnson Jr. joined the division over a year ago. Johnson said newer members should expect to make mistakes and continue learning on the job.

“Being a rookie, you’re going to make mistakes, you’re going to learn. You have to learn a lot of things.”

Private Matt Kleiber said personnel must stay physically and mentally prepared for high workplace demands.

“We’re expected to be the best of the best. When you first hit the line, we know enough to survive but maybe not enough to thrive.”

The municipal division provides fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical services across the city. Academy recruits undergo rigorous operational training to prepare for active emergency duty.

The application window closes Nov. 6 at 11:59 p.m. Toledo officials will host informational meetings in the basement of the Goodwill Building at 1120 Madison Ave. on Oct. 7, Oct. 22, and Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
