Angel Wing receives support after paralyzed in Toledo robbery shooting
Eighteen-year-old Angel Wing is recovering after a robbery shooting in Toledo left her paralyzed. The Springfield High School student was six months pregnant when the incident occurred.
Wing connected with someone online and arranged a meeting. She and her boyfriend drove to Greenway Avenue for the meet-up.
A man dressed in all black walked up to their car, police say. The man pointed a gun at her boyfriend’s head and demanded money.
Her boyfriend tried to wrestle the gun away. The gunman then pulled the trigger.
“The guy pulls the trigger, and it hits my daughter in the left arm and goes through her side, right above the baby. By the grace of God [it] misses the baby, but lodges in her chest,” said Brandy Jones, Angel’s mother.
The bullet missed the unborn child. It left Wing with a spinal fracture and paralysis.
“She has a spinal fracture at the 12th vertebrae, so she’s currently paralyzed now. And that’s going to be difficult enough, because she can’t really use her right arm either, and she’s got a baby on the way,” Jones said.
The physical trauma sent Wing into early labor at 26 weeks. Her baby has since come home from the hospital.
Wing faces a long recovery process. Her family continues to seek aid.
“It’s the worst feeling in the world to see your kid suffering and not being able to do anything about it,” Jones said.
Yark Automotive Group and 13abc presented Wing with a check for $1,300. Jones accepted the funds on behalf of her daughter.
“They’re angels. Literally, an angel for Angel while they’re waiting on disability and everything. This is literally life saving,” she said.
Community aid programs provide direct financial assistance to local crime victims. These funds help families cover medical costs and daily expenses during ongoing physical rehabilitation in Toledo.
Wing remains focused on her physical recovery.
