Tayshawn Smith sentenced to prison in Toledo shooting
Tayshawn Smith received a prison sentence in Toledo after he pleaded guilty in a December 2025 shooting. Judge Dean Mandros sentenced the 19-year-old on Sept. 28 to serve 7.5 to 10.5 years behind bars.
Mandros found Smith guilty of two counts of aggravated assault. Smith also pleaded guilty to one count of felonious assault. Firearm specifications attached to each count were set for dismissal at sentencing, according to court records.
Officers arrested Smith for gunfire near the intersection of Avondale and 15th Street in Toledo. The incident happened around 3:40 p.m. on December 14, 2025.
A 21-year-old victim arrived at an area hospital with a gunshot wound, Toledo police reports said. The victim sat in the passenger seat of a parked car when someone shot into the vehicle. The gunfire hit him in the side, the victim told officers. Another person at the corner also fired shots, the victim said.
Video evidence showed a suspect running into an apartment in the 800 block of 15th Street, the report said. Authorities set up a perimeter with negotiators and a SWAT team.
Three people later exited the apartment. Officers detained a 17-year-old, an 18-year-old and a 21-year-old at the scene.
Felonious assault cases in Ohio move through the county common pleas court system. Sentenced individuals transfer from local custody to state correctional facilities. Prison terms depend on the specific felony level and judicial findings.
