Scott Dodd Jr. seeks insanity plea in stabbing of Gibsonburg officer

Scott Dodd Jr. is seeking an insanity plea in the August stabbing of Police Officer Maria Kisha in Gibsonburg, Ohio, court records show. The plea would let a judge weigh his mental state at the time of the bank attack on the officer, a step that could shape the attempted murder case against him.

Dodd, 25, is charged with attempted murder, felonious assault, obstruction and criminal possession in the attack. The charges stem from the stabbing at a local bank on August 26. Officer Maria Kisha was stabbed in the neck during the incident.

A judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf during his initial court appearance. Court dockets later updated to show a competency evaluation was requested for Dodd. That evaluation would decide whether he can pursue a not guilty by reason of insanity plea.

Dodd’s bail was set at $1 million during a previous court appearance. He was arrested after several hours on the run following the stabbing.

Gibsonburg is a small village in Sandusky County in northern Ohio. A not guilty by reason of insanity plea asks a court to find a defendant lacked the mental capacity to understand the wrongfulness of an act at the time it occurred.
