Oregon neighbors call for action over speeding on Schmidlin Road

Ava Pecina and other Oregon residents report persistent problems with speeding vehicles traveling along Schmidlin Road. Drivers routinely exceed the posted 25 mile per hour speed limit on the residential street. The roadway is often used as a cut-through route. That practice brings heavier traffic and more fast drivers.

Pecina has lived along the street for seven years. She described multiple close calls with speeding vehicles near her home.

“We have a lot of little kids who live on this street. We should not be speeding,” she said.

Pecina reported that she and a friend were nearly struck while walking. She also avoided a crash while pulling out in her car. A fast driver was not paying attention during that incident. She slammed on her brakes to prevent a collision.

Kayleigh Siler moved to the Oregon neighborhood two months ago with her family. She said speeding occurs regularly in the area. Siler saw a driver speed around a stopped school bus earlier this week.

“I was standing here on my front porch watching them get on and they did get on safely, but after they got on the bus, there was a driver that waited patiently, thankfully, behind the bus. But after the doors closed, they kind of just went and veered off to the left and went around. Completely just took off in a crazy hurry,” Siler said.

Residents want traffic changes installed on the roadway. Siler suggested adding stop signs or speed bumps to protect children. Pecina said she supports installing traffic cameras along the street.

City councils manage municipal roadways and review neighborhood traffic safety measures. Local officials examine speed data to determine whether traffic calming devices are appropriate.

Oregon City Council members received inquiries regarding these safety concerns. A response from local officials is pending.
