Dana Slay, trailblazing Toledo police officer, dies at 67

Long-time Toledo Police Department officer Dana Slay died Sept. 27 at the age of 67. She made history in 2023 as the first Black officer to wear the department’s prestigious Badge No. 1. Pastor Carl E. Mitchell III announced her death.

The Toledo Police Department honored Slay as its longest-serving member. She joined the department on December 14, 1990. She served the agency for more than 33 years.

The department called Slay a trailblazing member. In January 2023, she earned Badge No. 1 as the longest-serving patrol officer. Mitchell said she was also the first African-American woman to receive the badge.

Slay worked in patrol, operations and community services. Her daughter, Kimbrance Slay, said her mother was very proud of the badge.

“She wanted that badge and she wanted to make history and she did just that. She did just that and I’m proud of her,” she said.

Kimbrance said her mother held block watch meetings. She also spent years mentoring children across Toledo.

“She helped kids. She loved helping kids. Little kids, teenagers, even if they were past 18 , she lectured kids. She told kids and people about life. She wanted people to have a better life,” Kimbrance said.

Retired Toledo police officer Floella Wormely said Slay was known for being direct.

“She just was really honest about it. Her calling , she did not sugarcoat it or make it where it would be good for the department. She just told the truth,” Wormely said.

Kimbrance said community members have sent messages about her mother. One person told her Slay saved their life.

“‘Your mama saved my life.’ That right there was my mom’s purpose on this earth. She served her purpose,” she said.

The Toledo Police Department released a statement about the retired officer. The department praised her energy, laugh and connection with people.

“The Toledo Police Department is deeply saddened by the passing of retired Officer Dana Slay, a mentor and friend who meant so much to our department and the Toledo community. Dana joined the Toledo Police Department on December 14, 1990, and dedicated more than 33 years to serving the city she called home.”

The statement noted Slay once called herself a hometown girl. The department said she was proud to serve her city.

“Rest easy, Dana. Your legacy will always be a part of TPD and the City of Toledo.”

The Toledo Police Department provides law enforcement and public safety services. Police agencies often hold public visitation and memorial services for retired staff. These events allow colleagues and residents to pay their respects.

Services will take place at Southern Missionary Baptist Church at 1222 Indiana Avenue. Visitation hours are:
