Dundee police issue alert after string of vehicle thefts and break-ins

The Village of Dundee issued a crime and safety alert after several automobile thefts and break-ins overnight. Unlocked vehicles were targeted between 1 and 5 a.m., mainly on the western side of town.

Every entered vehicle had unlocked doors and contained valuables or keys, according to the official alert.

Dundee Police Department Deputy Chief Randy Sehl said criminals seek easy targets.

“They’re looking not to be noticed, they’re looking for cars that they don’t have to break in to. They’re not breaking glass, they’re not setting off alarms. They’re entering cars that are unlocked and the alarm systems are not set,” Sehl said.

Sehl stated that the incidents took place under the cover of darkness. Thieves took items such as purses, credit cards and other valuables.

One vehicle contained keys, which allowed the suspects to drive away, according to Sehl.

“I think the only reason they took the cars is because the keys were in them. I don’t think they were looking to steal those, it was just an opportunity that presented itself when they entered the car,” Sehl said.

Officers found the two stolen cars in the Westland, Michigan, area. Other nearby communities report similar criminal activity.

Milan Police investigated up to four car thefts in their area that may connect to these cases, Sehl said.

Investigators are checking Flock camera recordings and tracking leads to find the suspects. Dundee officials noted the case might involve a larger crime ring.

The Michigan State Police may assist with the multi-jurisdictional case. Village of Dundee Police Department officers are boosting street patrols and adding extra manpower.

Police departments regularly work across village and county borders during property crime investigations. Multi-jurisdiction task forces help agencies share evidence and track recovered vehicles.

Officials ask residents to lock car doors, remove valuables and turn on exterior home lights. Anyone with information should call central dispatch at 734-243-7070.
