New Doppler radar installed in Arcadia to close weather gap
Crews began putting up a Doppler radar system in Arcadia to cover regional weather. The equipment will provide live data about storms across northwest Ohio.
The company ClimaVision is handling the work. 13 Action News serves as an exclusive partner for the project. The 13 First Alert Weather Team will gain access to the data.
Northwest Ohio sits in a known radar gap. The system will close that gap. It will track rain, snow, wind and rotation in potentially tornadic storms.
Riley Pfeiffer serves as project manager and meteorologist for ClimaVision. Pfeiffer spoke about the benefits for 13abc viewers.
“This weather radar and data is going to be fantastic for 13abc, they will be able to keep their viewers most up to date to severe weather threats headed their way,” Pfeiffer said. “And it will give you all and extra level detail as to the weather threats approaching your coverage area and really make sure that you can keep people safe and updated.”
A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place Tuesday afternoon. Crews will mount the device about 155 feet up the Arcadia water tower on Wednesday.
Weather radars scan the atmosphere to spot precipitation and wind patterns. Local officials often use water towers to elevate transmission equipment.
The radar should start operating by late fall or early winter.
