Jahiem D. Wright arrested in Toledo hit-and-run injuring Marcy Kaptur

Authorities booked Jahiem D. Wright into a Toledo jail following an August hit-and-run crash. The collision injured U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur and one of her congressional staff members.

Lucas County records show Jahiem D. Wright, 24, of Toledo, entered the Lucas County Corrections Center on Oct. 14, 2026. Officers took him into custody more than two months after the crash occurred.

Officials charged Wright on Sept. 1 for his alleged role in the collision. Authorities stated he had been on the run since that date. He faces two counts of aggravated vehicular assault. He also faces a charge of failure to stop after an accident.

The office for Marcy Kaptur issued a statement on Wednesday regarding the arrest.

“Congresswoman Kaptur appreciates the diligence of law enforcement, who continued to investigate from the day of the accident until today’s arrest. We will not provide additional comment at this time and will let the legal process play out through the justice system,” her office said.

Court filings allege Wright drove twice the speed limit in heavy rain. Toledo police said he drove through a large puddle and lost control. His car crossed the center line. It then hit the vehicle carrying Kaptur and staffer Kegan Zimmerman.

Court documents also state Wright drove recklessly under a non-compliance license suspension. The collision occurred on N. Detroit near Central Avenue on Aug. 2, 2026. Her office said Kaptur was traveling to a church service at the time.

Police said the at-fault driver fled the scene on foot. Medics transported Kaptur and Zimmerman to a hospital for treatment. Kaptur left the hospital one week later and began physical rehabilitation. She returned to Washington and her campaign trail six weeks after the incident. She faces Derek Merrin in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District.

Body camera footage captured responses from the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department and the Toledo Police Department. Toledo Police Chief Troendle discussed details of the ongoing investigation.

Aggravated vehicular assault charges in Ohio involve serious physical harm caused while operating a motor vehicle. Jail booking processes record personal details and formally log active warrants. Defendants then await initial court appearances before a judge.

The arrest took place in Lucas County following the summer investigation. Wright remains held in Toledo as the legal process moves forward.
