Toledo City Council members are scheduled to discuss Flock cameras Thursday evening. The discussion comes as council reviews an ordinance to initiate an audit on Flock camera data.
The meeting begins at 4 p.m. Sept. 17. It is part of the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Committee meeting in council chambers at One Government Center.
The legislation seeks to provide more detail about the city’s governance and oversight of the license plate reader technology. The goal is to see what is happening with Toledo’s Flock data, who is using it and how.
The use of Flock cameras has been a point of controversy in Toledo and communities across the country. Many citizens and city council members have raised concerns about civil rights implications.
Numerous instances have been reported across the country of officers using Flock data improperly and doing plate searches that do not relate to law enforcement matters. So far, none of that has been reported in Toledo or Lucas County.
Local leaders in law enforcement have argued it is a useful tool for tracking down those responsible for crime and helping find victims. The camera system was recently praised for helping to track down a missing girl in Lucas County.
