Davalon Woodson-Spivey indicted in Toledo shooting and SWAT standoff
Davalon Woodson-Spivey was indicted in Toledo on felonious assault and weapons charges, court records show. The indictment follows a SWAT standoff and a shooting that left a man seriously hurt on Thursday. The circumstances leading up to the gunfire have not been released.
Authorities responded to a report of a person shot near New York Avenue and Erie Street. Police said that call arrived just before 6 p.m. Officers found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound, according to police.
Officers gave medical aid at the scene. Emergency crews took the victim to a hospital with serious injuries, TPD said. The matter remains under investigation.
Officers said Woodson-Spivey, 19, ran to North Point Commons Apartments on the 2900 block of N. Summit Street. He then barricaded himself inside, according to officers. SWAT units responded to the scene.
“I came down to investigate, and I see all these police units surrounding something, and it’s the apartment complex,” Eleodoro Martinez said. “Next thing you know, they’re telling me to back off or back up a little bit more, so I backed up.”
Officers took Woodson-Spivey into custody just before 7 p.m. following negotiations. He surrendered without further reported incident. He was arrested on site.
“We didn’t think nothing,” neighbor Roberto Selvera said. “You know, we thought, ‘Well, you hear it all the time.’ The SWAT truck … you get nervous, man, because you don’t know. You don’t see that every day.”
Woodson-Spivey was indicted on Oct. 26. He faces one count of felonious assault with two firearm specifications attached. He also faces one count of having weapons while under disability.
A grand jury indictment formally charges a defendant with felonies in common pleas court. A judge sets bail to determine release conditions before future hearings. A judge set bail for Woodson-Spivey at $250,000.
The incident took place in north Toledo. Detectives continue to review the case details. No trial date is set.
