Toledo cybersecurity experts use AI to fight rising cybercrime threats
Gwen Betts and Jason Slagle are using artificial intelligence in Toledo to target cybercriminals. Their work counters digital attackers who now employ the exact same automated tools. Cybercrime attacks are currently on the rise.
Ohio Tech News recently honored Betts and Slagle among the state’s highest regarded cyber security experts. Betts serves as co-founder of the Maro Group and Galing Group. Slagle is the president of CNWR.
The technology works well to find weaknesses in systems. That includes digital vulnerabilities that small businesses have in their technology setups.
“AI really accelerates their ability to do bad things to everyday, normal people,” Betts said.
Online criminals use automated software to study corporate targets. They then craft precise messages to deceive workers.
Slagle explained how attackers operate.
“They can use AI to do research specifically about your company and they can send you bait and targeting that seems very, very convincing,” said Jason Slagle, president of CNWR.
Both Toledo professionals urge residents to keep using long-standing critical web habits. People should remain alert to digital tricks.
“Have an air of suspiciousness,” Slagle said. “It’s probably the case that your CEO is not texting you during a meeting to go buy gift cards.”
The software allows more people to enter the cybercrime space. Users must watch what they share online to protect their firms.
“This is the constant cat-and-mouse game we have had with technology really over the past 20 to 30 years,” Betts said. “What AI makes different is that it makes expertise available to anyone.”
Experts caution against letting automated programs handle corporate bank accounts. Spoofed vendor emails often claim banking details changed and demand payments. Automatic responses skip a vital review step whenever money gets requested.
Cybersecurity specialists work to identify flaws in digital systems before malicious actors exploit them. Business owners frequently consult external computer firms to evaluate software firewalls and data safeguards. Technical audits help identify corporate weaknesses across Northwest Ohio.
Residents should always apply a critical eye before transferring corporate funds.
