About us
The Glass City Ledger is an independent newsroom covering Toledo and northwest Ohio — city hall, the courts, the schools, the teams and the weather coming off the lake.
We publish every weekday. We are small, we are local, and we answer to the people who read us rather than to an owner somewhere else. When something happens in this city, our first question is not whether it will travel — it is whether it matters to the people who live here.
What we cover
Five desks, chosen because they are what this city actually asks about:
- Latest News — business and development, food and drink, arts and culture, and commentary. The general-interest desk, and where most of our reporting lands.
- Local News — the council chamber, the school board, the budget, and the neighbourhoods from the East Side to the riverfront.
- Crime — police, the courts, fire and emergency response. We follow cases past the arrest, because the charge is rarely the end of the story.
- Sports — the Glassblowers, high school Friday nights, the river clubs, and the college programmes this city follows.
- Weather — the lake, the river and the forecast. In a city that gets its worst snow from a body of water ninety kilometres away, weather is a local news beat, not a filler segment.
The newsroom
Four reporters, each with a beat they actually work:
- Imani Reyes — city hall, schools and local news. Reads the agenda packet so you do not have to, and asks what got left out of it.
- Dov Kellerman — business and development. Follows the money from the riverfront to the industrial parks.
- Marcus Oyelaran — sports, crime and the courts, and the parts of the Glass City that only show up after dark.
- Hannah Brecht — weather and the river. Has walked the whole length of the Maumee floodplain, twice.
How we work
A few commitments that shape what you read here:
- We go to the meeting. Not the press release about the meeting. If we were not in the room, we say so.
- We name our sources wherever we can. Anonymity is granted only when someone faces a real risk for speaking, never as a convenience, and an editor signs off on every instance.
- We show our work. Where a story rests on a document, a budget line or a dataset, we link to it or tell you how to request it yourself.
- We ask before we publish. Anyone criticised in a story gets a genuine chance to respond, and we tell you if they declined.
- No generative AI writes our journalism. We use software to transcribe and to search public records; we do not use it to draft reporting, and no article here is machine-written.
Corrections
We get things wrong, and when we do we fix them in the open. Corrections are appended to the story itself, dated, and describe what was wrong rather than quietly editing the error away. Significant corrections stay at the top of the article.

Independence and funding
The Ledger is reader-funded and locally owned. We take advertising, but advertisers see no copy before publication and have no say over what we cover — the newsroom and the business side are separate, and sponsored content is labelled as such every time.
No political party, campaign or candidate funds this newsroom, and we make no endorsements.
