Albuquerque Shooting Suspect Isaiah Martinez Ordered Held Without Bail

An Albuquerque teenager accused in a downtown shooting that left a man in critical condition will stay in jail while his case moves toward trial, a New Mexico district judge has ruled.

Isaiah Martinez, 18, was ordered held at the Metropolitan Detention Center after Second Judicial District Judge Emeterio Rudolfo found at a pretrial detention hearing in Bernalillo County that no release conditions could protect public safety, prosecutors argued.

Police say the gunfire followed a street dispute near downtown Albuquerque early on a Sunday morning. An automated ShotSpotter alert recorded 17 gunshots near Central Avenue and 8th Street NW, and officers found an adult man with severe gunshot wounds who was taken to a local trauma center.

According to court documents, Martinez was with 18-year-old Matthew Akugue when the two walked to a vehicle after arguing with the victim. Detectives allege the car approached the man near the roundabout at Central and 8th, and that Martinez fired multiple rounds at close range from the vehicle before it drove away. Both young men were later taken into custody.

Formal indictments and trial preparations will proceed through the Second Judicial District Court. Martinez, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
