Lindsay Webb prepares first Lucas County tax sale in two decades

Treasurer Lindsay Webb will launch a delinquent debt auction in Lucas County to recover overdue tax money. The action allows the local government to collect millions of dollars owed on delinquent real estate parcels. Owners must act soon to keep their properties off the auction list.

The upcoming transaction targets 407 properties. Those parcels carry a combined total of $3.6 million in overdue taxes.

Webb said the auction focuses on owners who live outside Lucas County. The tax certificates will be sold to one buyer as a package.

Webb said this effort serves as a pilot program. It scratches the surface of the total back taxes owed.

“We have a big problem with tax delinquency in this community, and I am using data and analysis to determine a path forward, and I felt like it was time to bring this back,” Webb said. “The number is 200 million and I’m selling 4 million right now.”

Delinquent land auctions allow local governments to collect unpaid property taxes by selling tax liens to investors. Investors purchase the debt to collect interest or begin the process of foreclosure on the parcel.

Property owners can avoid the sale by paying their delinquent taxes in Toledo. Payments must be received by Nov. 12. Time is running out.
