Henry Goodlow convicted of eight felonies in Toledo police chase shooting

Henry Goodlow was convicted of eight felonies on October 20 in Toledo following a police pursuit. He faces nearly a century in prison for shooting at officers during the incident. Goodlow pleaded no contest to the charges.

The 37-year-old entered pleas to several specific offenses, according to prosecutors. The convictions include:

  • Six counts of felonious assault
  • One count of failure to comply
  • One weapons charge

An attempted murder charge was dropped. He could face nearly a century-long prison sentence, according to the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office. Goodlow will be sentenced November 13.

The incident began on Jan. 7. The Toledo Police Gang Unit pursued a minivan. A driver took off following an attempted traffic stop.

The van crashed near Oak Creek and South Creek lanes. This occurred in a neighborhood off Airport Highway. Goodlow fled the vehicle. He led officers on a foot chase.

Goodlow fired six shots at officers, police said. TPD returned gunfire. Nobody was shot during the exchange.

Neighbors living nearby said the event was unnerving. “It was definitely unnerving,” Earnest Colemen said.

The chase ended between two houses near Copper Creek and South Creek Lanes. Jerry Hayworth said officers caught Goodlow on the other side of his fence. Hayworth watched the arrest unfold from his front door.

Officers pushed Goodlow into the fence during the arrest, Hayworth said. “There were about four to five policemen right here,” Hayworth said. He pointed to the other side of his fence.

A woman living on the other side of Hayworth said Goodlow hid in her bushes. She declined to share her name. She said she was in her garage at the time.

She said bullets flew close to her residence. “One could have easily came through the wall where I was sitting at, because on the other side of that wall was the bushes outside,” she said.

Police recovered a weapon behind a home on South Creek Lane. Goodlow had active warrants at the time of the incident, police said. Those warrants included two for strangulation and one for tampering with records.

The officer who fired his weapon will be on paid leave. Internal procedures typically place officers on administrative leave following an on-duty shooting incident.

The Toledo Police Department documented the incident through cruiser dashcam and officer bodycam recordings. Sentencings for Lucas County felony cases are scheduled through the common pleas court system.
