Kenasia Guilford has most charges dropped in Toledo firefighter incident

Kenasia Guilford saw prosecutors drop most of her charges in Toledo, court records show. She entered a plea agreement after facing multiple counts tied to a fellow firefighter. Police allege she handcuffed a man to a staircase with his consent. She later refused to unlock the restraints.

The 33-year-old was originally charged with abduction, theft, motor vehicle theft and burglary. Prosecutors amended the burglary charge to an aggravated trespassing charge. Guilford pleaded no contest on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Police accused Guilford of taking the victim’s phone, car keys and house keys. She also faced accusations of breaking into his house. Officers said they found her hiding in an upstairs bedroom.

The victim is a Toledo Fire & Rescue Department captain. The two firefighters were in a relationship, according to a 911 call. Her sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 2.

Attorney Richard Mitchell described what led up to the incident between the department coworkers.

“This series of incidents stems from a paramour situation, where some information was learned by the defendant that would make anyone have substantial concern and was traumatic,” Mitchell said.

A friend of the captain called 911 for help at four in the morning. He told dispatchers that he picked up his friend. He drove him home.

“And he said he had to gnaw , she handcuffed him to some railing or something. He said he had to fight his way off of there, so he might be injured, I don’t know,” the caller said.

A plea of no contest allows a defendant to accept a conviction without admitting guilt. Toledo courts often set separate future dates for formal sentencing hearings after such pleas are entered.

The case was resolved through the plea entry in Toledo municipal legal proceedings.
