Amy Acton discusses affordability during campaign stop in Fremont

Democrat Amy Acton met with small business owners in Fremont during a Sandusky County campaign stop Tuesday. The visit highlighted her plans to address the cost of living across the state.

The event took place at Outpour Coffee. Part of the Ohio gubernatorial race moved through northwest Ohio with her appearance.

Reporters asked Acton about her immediate economic priorities for working families.

“We’re walking in on day one with executive orders around wage theft, around the cost of corruption. We are putting immediately into place in our 100-day plan actions within our agencies.”

Her initial state budget is already underway, she told reporters. She pledged an earned income tax credit above the federal level.

“One of the programs I’m most excited about, a child tax credit. That is the quickest way to get families and children out of poverty.”

The candidate also pledged relief for older residents in Fremont and across Ohio. She said she plans to lower property taxes through a homestead exemption.

“We’re working on lowering property taxes through an immediate homestead exemption. I’ll be working on with the legislature.”

She noted her past work with five governors from both parties. If elected, she may face a Republican-controlled House and Senate.

Acton pointed to prior bipartisan agreement with opponent Vivek Ramaswamy on a gas tax holiday. Fuel prices remain a major topic for both campaigns.

“I can tell you, if our cars run on gas, this economy runs on diesel. Our farmers are struggling with the price of diesel right now and even small business owners are being often charged surcharges because of the fuel prices right now.”

State leaders regularly use targeted tax adjustments and executive directives to alter agency policies. Executive orders take effect immediately upon signature by a governor.

During the stop in Fremont, she also discussed data centers. She called for a conditional moratorium on the facilities.
